March 29 – June 1, 2014
Terrazzo Art Projects is pleased to present OF LIGHT AND TIME, an exhibition of photography by Jonas Mekas, Lucas Samaras, Ariane Lopez-Huici, Julio Grinblatt, Lindsay Packer, Vera Mijkovic, and Maureen Beitler. Bringing together artists who are fundamentally different from one another and finding the common thread is the vision of artist and independent curator Gayle Ruskin.
The power of photography is the recognition that what is seen is lost forever. It is the chronicling of life as fleeting moments that become memory.
Moments are captured and mysteries unfold in each of the photographs in the exhibition; finding a common but circuitous dialog between one another. Whether in Ariane Lopez-Huici’s surreal single solitary subject, obscured in black fabric, but for one hand adrift or the fleeting moment of a skateboarder at the apex of his jump, surrounded by light and dark of Julio Grinblatt or the staged and poetic drama conveyed by Vera Miljkovic.
Although a “Self-Portrait”, Lucas Samaras’s Polaroid has a quality of something being seen from the outside and looking in, as if the artist was grooming himself in a mirror’s reflection; relating to Jonas Mekas’s candid observations of the Kennedy family, echoing another time, during happy summers in Montauk in the 1970’s. Maureen Beitler’s photographs resonate with the shadows of lives past in abstracted images of lines and textures of light in corridors of a decaying prison. Lindsay Packer’s installations comprised of ordinary materials and simple optics allows the viewer to experience movement and the presence of reflected and displaced light which creates unpredictable yet seemingly choreographed patterns.
